K\u00e1lamos (Grieks: \u039a\u03ac\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2, in de oudheid bekend als \u039a\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2 - Karnos), is een bergachtig eiland en een voormalige gemeente op de Ionische Eilanden, Griekenland. Sinds de gemeentelijke hervorming van 2011 maakt het deel uit van de gemeente Lefkada, waarvan het een gemeentelijke eenheid is. Het ligt ten oosten van Lefkada, vlakbij het Griekse vasteland. Het heeft een overwinterende bevolking van ongeveer 500 mensen, die in de zomer aanzienlijk wordt vergroot door toeristen. De naam Kalamos betekent riet in het Grieks. Het aantal inwoners bedroeg 496 bij de volkstelling van 2011. De landoppervlakte is 24,964 km2 en het hoogste punt ligt 754 m boven de zeespiegel.<\/div><\/div>

De belangrijkste nederzetting op het eiland is de havenstad K\u00e1lamos (454 inwoners), aan de oostkust van het eiland. Vanaf hier verbindt een regelmatige veerdienst het eiland met Mytikas op het vasteland. Episkopi (42 inwoners) is het enige andere bewoonde dorp op het eiland. Het dorp Kefali, ook bekend onder de Venetiaanse naam Porto Leone, werd verlaten na de Ionische aardbeving van 1953, die de watertoevoer verwoestte, maar de kerk is nog steeds in gebruik.<\/div><\/div>

In het begin van de jaren 1990 werd het watersysteem herbouwd en nu heeft elk huishouden stromend water. Ook zijn in de afgelopen jaren alle voetpaden, die ooit onverhard waren, opgewaardeerd naar stenen of bestrating. Kalamos, ooit een afgelegen eiland zonder elektriciteit of een goed watersysteem, heeft nu alle gemakken van het vasteland. Het dichtstbijzijnde lyceum (middelbare school) en gymnasium (middelbare school) zijn in Aetolia-Acarnania op het vasteland, maar de meeste leerlingen gaan naar school in Nydri op Lefkada.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
